Log-Off:
Protecting young minds in a digital world 🎓✨

Did you know that young people spend, on average, over two hours a day on social media? But how often do we stop and ask—what is this constant connection actually doing to us? Being online all the time has become normal, especially for young people.

However, being connected doesn’t always mean feeling connected. Social media can influence how people see themselves, how they build relationships, and how they feel day to day.

This campaign was created to encourage a more mindful approach to social media use. Instead of just focusing on the negatives, it aims to help young people understand their habits and make more positive choices online. By combining awareness with practical support, the campaign promotes small, realistic changes—helping young people build a healthier balance between their online and offline lives. It’s not about cutting social media out completely, but about using it in a way that supports wellbeing rather than harms it.

THE CHALLENGE

The challenge I addressed through my campaign is the increasing influence of social media in negatively impacting young people’s mental health. Throughout the development of this campaign, I identified that this issue was particularly significant in the context of relationship-building during school and university, where digital interaction often replaced or shaped real-life connections. I also recognised that this overreliance on social media could contribute to reduced academic performance and overall wellbeing. In exploring this challenge, I found that platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat had become deeply embedded in young people’s daily routines, acting as primary tools for communication and social validation. However, this reliance frequently encouraged comparison, unrealistic expectations, and pressure to remain constantly engaged. Reflecting on this, it became evident that many young people lacked awareness of how these behaviours could affect their mental health and their ability to form authentic relationships.

Furthermore, I observed that there was a gap in accessible, youth-focused resources that both informed and supported individuals in managing their online presence. Many young people were unaware of positive online communities or support systems, which reinforced feelings of isolation and anxiety rather than alleviating them. In response to these findings, my campaign aimed to both raise awareness and provide practical solutions. I developed digital detox kits, alongside an informative social media page and website, to educate young people about the risks associated with excessive social media use. Through this process, I aimed to equip them with the tools and knowledge needed to engage more safely and responsibly online. Reflecting on the overall challenge, I recognised the importance of not only highlighting the negative impacts of social media but also promoting a balanced approach to its use. The campaign therefore emphasised the value of digital detoxing and maintaining a healthy balance between online and offline life, encouraging young people to build more meaningful, real-world connections while still engaging positively with digital platforms.

AWARENESS

My campaign is focused on raising mental health awareness among young people while addressing the challenges posed by excessive social media use. Many young individuals look for support through these platforms, making it essential to understand their impact on mental health. By promoting healthy coping strategies and fostering a supportive community, we can empower students to manage their mental well-being effectively. As social media usage continues to rise, it is increasingly crucial to highlight its implications. By equipping young people with the tools for responsible online engagement, we can support their mental health and help them make informed choices.

ENCOUAGEMENT FOR CHANGE

The campaign encourages young people to develop healthy social media habits by highlighting the importance of taking regular breaks from online activities. These breaks can significantly improve overall well-being. Given the complex emotions that young people often experience regarding social media, finding a balance can lead to more positive interactions and help reduce negative ones (McCory, Best, and Maddock, 2022). To build a healthier relationship with social media, young people need to be aware of their emotional needs and recognise when they require support. Encouraging physical activity and fostering in-person connections can enhance mental well-being and help balance the digital world

FOSTERING CONNECTIONS

The campaign aims to raise awareness of the challenges associated with social media use by promoting meaningful connections. One effective approach is to encourage individuals to engage in open discussions with trusted adults. By informing young people about potential risks and helping them develop problem-solving skills, we can create a supportive environment for discussing online experiences. This initiative seeks to empower young people to navigate the digital landscape with confidence, fostering a healthier relationship with social media that prioritises their mental well-being (Geurts et al., 2022a; Gong et al., 2022). By enhancing communication and understanding, we, as a society, can cultivate resilience and promote informed decision-making when facing the challenges of social media.
